Does marriage counseling work? What the evidence shows
Yes, when the method is evidence-based and both partners show up: research on Emotionally Focused Therapy shows 70 to 75 percent of couples moving from distress to recovery, and about 90 percent improving significantly. Marriage counseling fails most often when it is unstructured, method-free talk, which is exactly what this practice is built to avoid.
Here is the research, how progress gets measured here, and what that has looked like for real couples.
The research behind the methods
The most validated couples model in the literature: 70 to 75 percent recover from distress, roughly 90 percent improve, and gains hold at follow-up rather than fading.
ICEEFT-COMPILED STUDIES
Built on more than 40 years of observational research with thousands of couples, including longitudinal studies that predicted divorce from conflict behavior with high accuracy.
THE GOTTMAN INSTITUTE
Grounded in attachment theory and neuroscience. A newer model with a growing evidence base, used here for regulating fast, physiological conflict that talk-first methods cannot reach.
PACT INSTITUTE
The common thread: outcomes in couples therapy depend less on how much you talk and more on whether the method matches the problem. That is the argument for a three-certification practice.
How progress gets measured here
Every couple takes a validated relationship assessment three times: at intake, at 12 weeks, and at close. You see your own scores move, or not, against your own baseline.
That last clause matters. If the numbers are flat, the plan changes, and you hear it said plainly. Open-ended therapy with no measurement is how couples spend two years politely stuck.
Two cases, anonymized
Six weeks after disclosure of an affair. Neither partner sleeping; both doubted the marriage would survive.
Stabilization, then meaning, then a properly made decision to stay, then EFT repair. They described more honesty than at any earlier point in the marriage.
Chronic miscommunication, one partner with ADHD, each convinced the other had stopped trying.
PACT-informed work plus AANE neurodiverse-couples methods reframed the problem as translation, not effort. Conflict frequency down; both reported feeling understood.
Details are altered to protect confidentiality; the trajectories are real.

Common questions
How long does marriage counseling take?
Most couples here complete the core program in 12 to 20 sessions, meeting weekly or every other week. Discernment counseling runs one to five sessions. You get an estimate for your situation after the assessment phase, not a guess on the phone.
What if my partner will not come?
Start with the free 15-minute call yourself. A reluctant partner usually is not rejecting help, they are rejecting being blamed in a stranger's office, and the first call is a place to plan around exactly that.
Is it too late for us?
Couples routinely arrive certain they are the exception, including after affairs and years of distance. The honest answer: too late exists, but it is rarer than it feels from inside a bad year, and the assessment phase is designed to tell you the truth about where you stand.
Is online couples therapy as effective?
For the talking phases of the work, research and clinical experience both say yes. Some assessments and intensives work better in person, and you will be told which applies to you before anything is scheduled.
What happens in the first session?
Seventy-five minutes, both partners. Your history, the pattern you are stuck in, and what each of you wants to be true a year from now. The assessment battery starts there, and by session three you have a feedback session with your relational map.
The path in is deliberately small.
A free 15-minute phone call, no notes, no commitment. You describe what is happening, and you get an honest answer about whether this practice fits, or a referral to someone in Towson who fits better.
The office is at 100 Allegheny Avenue, Suite 200, in downtown Towson, with parking on the block and the county garage next door. Telehealth covers the rest of Maryland. Fees are on the cost page, with most PPO plans reimbursing 50 to 80 percent out-of-network.
