What marriage counseling costs in Towson
Every fee in this practice is published below. Couples counseling here runs $250 to $350 per session, sits at the upper end of the Towson market, and there is a reason for that, stated plainly rather than implied: three advanced certifications, a doctoral-level clinician, and a structured program with measured outcomes instead of open-ended weekly talk.
The 15-minute consultation is free, so you can pressure-test the fit before spending anything.
Session fees
For reference, the assessment phase that starts the full program, three sessions in total, comes to about $825. Intensive details are on the services page.
How out-of-network insurance actually works
This practice is out-of-network by design. It keeps session length, frequency, and method clinical decisions rather than insurer decisions. Most clients with PPO plans still get a large share reimbursed, and the process is four steps:
COMMONLY USED OON: CAREFIRST/BCBS · AETNA · CIGNA · OPTUM/UNITED · JOHNS HOPKINS EHP
Before your first appointment, ask your insurance provider two questions: whether your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, and what your out-of-network deductible is. Those two answers tell you your real cost. Fees are the same for in-person and online couples therapy sessions.
Medicaid, Medicare and the referral list
Medicaid and Medicare are not accepted here. Rather than leave you searching, Dr. Vance keeps a current referral list of Towson-area couples therapists who do accept both, and will send it to you on request, whether or not you ever book here.
Sliding scale
A limited number of reduced-fee slots exist for couples with significant financial need, allocated case by case. Ask on the consultation call. It is a conversation, not a form.
Payment and cancellation
Cards, HSA and FSA cards, and bank transfer are all accepted, with payment due at the time of service. Cancellations need 48 hours notice to avoid the session fee; a couples slot held for you is a slot another couple could not take.
Common cost questions
What does marriage counseling cost in the Towson area?
Every practice prices differently, and many do not publish fees at all. This one does: $250 to $350 per session, $275 for the 75-minute intake, and a free 15-minute consultation. The average cost of couples therapy you see quoted online mixes every credential level, session length, and city, so it predicts little. A doctoral-level marriage counselor with multiple certifications sits at the upper end of any local market, and that is the tier this practice occupies.
Does insurance cover marriage counseling?
Often partially, through out-of-network mental health benefits. Insurers do not cover relationship counseling as such, but sessions tied to a covered diagnosis are frequently reimbursable at 50 to 80 percent for PPO plans. The superbill provided here contains the codes your insurer needs.
Why not just accept insurance in-network?
In-network contracts let insurers cap session length and count, and require diagnosing one partner as the identified patient. Out-of-network keeps those decisions between you and your therapist. The superbill route gives most PPO clients much of the cost back anyway.
How many sessions will we need?
Most couples complete the core program in 12 to 20 sessions. Discernment counseling runs one to five. Your assessment produces an estimate for your situation, and progress is re-measured at 12 weeks so the plan stays honest.
Is the consultation really free?
Yes. Fifteen minutes by phone, no notes, no record, no obligation. Its purpose is fit, in both directions.

Two fields and a sentence. Long intake forms filter out exactly the people who most need to be seen, so everything else waits until we have spoken.
