Dr. Eleanor Vance, couples therapist in Towson

My parents' marriage went through years that could have ended it. I was a kid in Baltimore watching two good people fail to reach each other, and then, slowly and imperfectly, manage it. Twenty years later I am still studying how that happens, first as a clinician, then as a researcher, now as both.

The formal version is shorter. I am a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist in Maryland with a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies. I opened The Resilient Heart in Towson because this county raised me, and because I wanted a practice where the treatment follows the evidence instead of one school of thought.

The path here

B.A.
Sociology · Towson UniversityI started in sociology because I wanted to know why families work the way they do. An internship at a local family services agency turned the question personal, and I stopped wanting to observe couples from a distance.
M.S.
Marriage & Family Therapy · UMD College ParkMy thesis looked at what digital communication was doing to marital intimacy, back when that seemed like an odd thing to study.
PH.D.
Human Development & Family Studies · Virginia TechMy doctoral research asked what happens in the brain and body when couples repair after a rupture. The AAMFT Foundation funded it.
NOW
Private practice, Towson · Adjunct faculty, UMDA practice on Allegheny Avenue, an adjunct post at Maryland where I supervise doctoral students, and research papers that still need writing.

How I work, six commitments

01

Attachment first

Your fights have a structure, and the structure comes from how each of you learned to stay safe in relationships. We find it before we fix anything.

02

Skills with a purpose

You leave sessions with concrete tools, but tools tied to the emotional pattern, never techniques for their own sake.

03

The nervous system gets a vote

Flooding and shutdown are physiology, not stubbornness. The work respects that and trains regulation directly.

04

The couple is the client

Not the partner who called, not the partner with the complaint. The relationship itself.

05

Inclusive by training

LGBTQ+ affirming, AANE-trained for neurodiverse couples, and structurally literate about non-traditional relationships.

06

Measured, honestly

Validated assessments at intake, 12 weeks, and close. If the numbers are not moving, we change the plan and say so out loud.

Credentials & training

Credentials, and what each one means

Nothing on this list is a workshop attendance certificate presented as a credential, and every certification can be verified with its certifying body.
